So, today we’re talking about Mountain Savory! Known as Satureja Montana in its latin name. (Did you know Montana meant Mountain?? Neither did I!!) This amazing EO is sometimes called Winter Savory or White Thyme. There’s also Summer Savory, but it’s a different variety, and although they’re both pretty close chemically and interchangeable aromatically, I would stick with Mountain Savory EO exclusively for internal use.
Our fun fact for today is actually a public service announcement in regard to Mountain Savory EO. This EO is fabulous, but it is also extremely toxic in all it’s forms. Aromatically, if you diffuse it, do not diffuse it alone, only use a couple drops at the most and mix it with a citrus EO or something from conifer line. It’s said that to smell it straight will cause irritation to your eyes and mucous membranes. Yes, your eyes and nose will burn. Also, when it’s taken internally, only do so for a short time, like for 2 or 3 days. No more than that, because it’s considered toxic. If you have any liver problems, do not take it at all. Also, do not use it in any form if you’re pregnant. And lastly, if used on the skin, dilute it heavily. 2 drops per 10 ml at most. Use a fatty oil, like avocado oil or cocoa butter.
Now, having said that, let’s explore what this fantastic EO can do!
First, it’s one of the best oils for your digestive system. It’s antibacterial, antiviral, lightly antiseptic, antiparasitic and antifungal. Yes, it’s that awesome. This EO is great for treating in the short-term bouts of diarrhea, nausea, colic in adults, and a form of Candida of the gut called Candida Albicans. Candida is present in everyone’s intestinal tract. It’s when the levels of candida get too high is when you start having problems. It can break down the walls of your intestinal lining and allow waste to leak into your blood stream. This is what’s known as leaky gut syndrome. So, Mountain Savory EO pits that all in check. One to two drops of it in a gel cap, once a day for two to three days, then follow with a good pre and probiotic to allow all the good bacteria to flourish.
Just a side note about how powerful Mountain Savory in its herb form is, many cultures over many centuries would add Mountain Savory in with their meats, like sausages and stews, to ward off food borne bacteria. And some cultures would add it in with their beans and cabbage dishes to allow for better digestion. So, you can only imagine how potent it is in EO form.
Next, Mountain Savory EO is another one of those oils that acts a stimulant for areas of your body. Like Sage last week, but not as strong. Mountain Savory EO is particularly effective in calling your immune system into action. Whether you’re taking it internally, topically or aromatically. Your immune system jumps into high gear and allows you to heal faster. It also speeds up the scar tissue process, as well, for wounds from abscesses, burns and cuts. I’d pair it with Patchouli EO as a wound salve to help speed up healing and reduce scaring. But remember to use a heavier than usual carrier oil for it.
Lastly, and this is extra interesting, Mountain Savory EO when used aromatically, helps to relieve the sense of overbearingness, of the need for control, allowing you to let go. I would diffuse this during a time of prayer with God when you’re having trouble dealing with situations you feel you have no control over. Meditate on Romans 8:28 during that time, as well.
“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”
Just relax and know that God’s got it all under control.
Mountain Savory is also an excellent energizer and motivator when used aromatically, as well. But remember, don’t diffuse it alone, use a drop or two with another EO, like a citrus or conifer. And DO NOT under any circumstances, sniff it straight from the bottle. You will regret it.
Well, that’s all for this week’s oily education! I hope you’ve enjoyed learning with me! Until next week, Happy Oiling Ya’ll!

Awesome stuff Rachel. I’m truly enejoying the show & notes from it each week.

Hi Amanda! I’m so glad you’re enjoying the show! This is a question I could an answer for! The best EO for Sun Spots is Frankincense. Put a dab in each spot and it will gradually allow them to fade away!
