Refreshing Jade Lemon

Today, I’m going to introduce you to one of the newest oils on the scene, Jade Lemon! With Summer right around the corner, this is a perfect essential oil to incorporate in all kinds of summer recipes and drinks.

First, let’s start with a fun fact about Jade Lemon! Jade lemon was created by grafting the root stock of the Taiwanese Mountain Lemon, with the shaft of a regular lemon tree. I’m sure it’s a bit more sciencey than that, but for simplicity’s sake. Tiawanese Mountain Lemons are small green lemons, that are hardy and grow in cooler, higher altitudes. Jade Lemons stay bright green when ripe and were named for the green jade bracelets the local women were wearing.

Jade Lemon is a great alternative to regular Lemon and Lime EOs in recipes because it has a bit of both scents and flavors. When making Lemon water, add 4 drops of Jade Lemon to a gallon of water instead. When you’re drinking sweet tea with lemon, use a drop of Jade lemon for refreshing change. Even guacamole, switch out your usual lime with Jade Lemon EO. I’ve been making guacamole with Lime EO and sometimes Lemon EO for a while. Make you Guac recipe as usual, but when it comes time to add the citrus, start with two drops of Jade Lemon EO or Lime EO, mix in well. You can add a drop or two to taste. It’s like having the essence of the citrus without the acid that comes with it.

Jade Lemon is very rich in the antioxidant, D-Limonene, which is well-known and documented, for use in lessening the presence of and damage from free radicals. What are free radicals, you ask? Here’s the basic description:

Free radicals are atoms or groups of atoms with an odd (unpaired) number of electrons and can be formed when oxygen interacts with certain molecules. Once formed these highly reactive radicals can start a chain reaction, like dominoes. Their chief danger comes from the damage they can do when they react with important cellular components such as DNA, or the cell membrane. Cells may function poorly or die if this occurs. This is called oxidative stress.

When your cells experience too much oxidative stress, this is where cancer can develop, the aging process starts to speed up, inflammation becomes present in different forms. So, the use of antioxidants is important for keeping control of that free radical activity. We’ve talked before about how scientists are using citrus EOs to help treat different forms of cancers and they’re getting very promising results! Even WebMD has acknowledged the power of D-Limonene in cancer research here. So, back to Jade Lemon. Taking this oil in a gel cap along with your other regular supplements, will aid in reducing and warding off any of that oxidative stress. Take 3 to 4 drops of Jade Lemon in a gel cap once a day.

And lastly, Jade Lemon is amazing for helping in cleaning your home!

You can use it to add a great scent to your laundry. Add two drops of Jade Lemon EO to a ½ cup of white distilled vinegar in your washing machine rinse cycle instead of using those chemical based fabric softener sheets. I did not know that you could use white distilled vinegar for fabric softener, so consider my mind blown!

You can also add to your dishwashing cycle, too! Just add a couple drops to your dishwash detergent when you load the machine and it will help give your dishes a spot free shine and scent your kitchen with that lemony lime goodness.

Jade Lemon is an excellent solvent for gum residue, or any kind of sticky residue, and even permanent marker. Just add a couple drops to the spot, undiluted and lightly scrub away the spot. You can use Lemon EO for this, as well.

You can make your own furniture polish with Jade Lemon EO and olive oil. 2 drops of Jade Lemon to 1 TBS of Olive oil is all you need to have a healthy for you polish for your home furniture!

Well, that’s it for Jade Lemon EO! I hope you enjoy using this very versatile EO! Until next time, Happy Oiling!
