Palo Santo = Holy Wood

This Essential Oil is so interesting to me. I found myself saying Palo Santo in the most peculiar way all week while I was prepping for this post and radio show.

“Paaalllooooooo Saaannttoooooooooo….”

Just like a boxing ring announcer would. Even my kids started to repeat me, running through the house with big voices. Maybe it’s because it sounds like a heavyweight boxer name, or something? I will tell you this, Palo Santo is a heavy weight in the essential oil world.

In Spanish, Palo Santo literally translates into Holy Wood. And it’s related to two of the holiest of trees, Frankincense and Myrrh. It originates from the coast of South America, mostly in Ecuador. It has a earthy, citrus and mint scent to it.

This next fun fact kinda blew my mind. The Palo Santo tree has to be dead for a minimum of two years before they can harvest the oil. What?!? Yes, during that time the oil draws into the heartwood (the central and hardest part of the tree). Once it’s aged properly, the tree is then chipped and turned into sawdust, and then the sawdust is steam distilled to get the oil. That is quite a process! And it takes roughly 20 lbs of sawdust to make 33 15ml bottles of oil. Amazing! That’s a lot of sawdust!

Now, like it’s cousins Frankincense and Myrrh, Palo Santo is relatively high in Monoterpenes which are great for a emotional and spiritual core of our brains and is a great EO for diffusing during times of bible study, meditation, praying. Anytime you’re wanting to get more in tune spiritually with God. It’s calming and uplifting to the spirit.

It’s also great to diffuse throughout your home to clear the air and clear the attitudes. Whether it be to rid your home of odors or negative energy. Palo Santo’s D-Limonene levels are similar to those in citrus EOs, and have similar anti-depressant qualities.

Palo Santo is also excellent for reducing the inflammatory response in the body caused by poor diet, stress, chemical exposure and illness. It’s also a huge support for your immune system. It can be taken internally, by either adding it directly to your morning or evening tea or you can take 4 to 5 drops in a gel cap once a day. I’d even add a few drops of Copaiba to that gelcap, as well, because we know from this post, that Copaiba is a powerful anti-inflammatory, as well!

Palo Santo is also great for allergy support. Because of it’s anti-inflammatory qualities, it’s a great histamine blocker during allergy season. When you’re having problems with allergies, I’d try diffusing Roman Chamomile and Palo Santo, equal parts off and on during the day and through the night, until your symptoms, subside.

Well, that’s it for this post! Have any questions about EOs? Either click the Contact button in the top right corner or send me an email at thecurrentoilco@gmail.com. Happy Oiling Everyone!
