Welcome to our first Essential Oil Q & A show! I’m so excited because throughout the month of January all our oil loving listeners submitted their questions about specific needs they had from oils. And there were so many questions, we couldn’t get to all of them during the show! That is a fantastic problem to have. Here’s the oily wisdom we were able to provide!
- What oils are good for your Thyroid? – Myrtle and Myrrh. Both will work no matter the condition whether it’s hormone related, over or under-active. If you take either oil and rub it on your hands, the bottoms of your feet, and the base of your neck, once or twice a day (I prefer right before bedtime), you should notice a difference within a month. I do know not from concentrate coconut water is excellent for thyroid conditions as well.
- What oils help with perimenopause? – Ylang Ylang is my go to for any kind of hormonal imbalance. A couple drops rubbed across your abdomen once or twice a day for the duration of your symptoms will help you immensely. Now there are different oils that will help with different symptoms, so if there’s a particular symptom that you need help with, let me know and we’ll find something to help you with that.
- What oils help with mental recall? – Clarity blend, Vetiver and Peppermint are excellent choices for anything mental. Those are my personal favorites as I suffer from brain fog on a regular basis. Those oils either used together or separately should be diffused anytime you feel like you need a mental boost in your memory department. If you don’t have your diffuser with you, put a drop of any or all of them in your hands, rub hands together and cup them over your nose. Inhale deeply and continue to do so for about 5 mins. You’ll notice a difference right away. If it’s informational recall, diffuse or wear peppermint specifically while learning the information and then diffuse or wear it again when you need to recall the info. Like during study and test time. Memory recall is boosted by about 33% when using Peppermint.
- What oils are good for your vision? (I need help with this one) – Frankincense and Lemongrass. Always use with a carrier oils and be very careful about applying near the eyes. Take a drop of either or both, with any carrier oil (use what is good for your skin type) and rub all around the eyes even on the upper part of the eyelid, just below the eyebrow. I’m going to guinea pig on myself with this one! It’s said that using this will bring results quickly, depending on the condition.
- What oils help with Mono? – Ravintsara is one of the most powerful immune boosting essential oils. It’s antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, anti-infectious and an expectorant. Diffusing this oil will help support the respiratory and immune system weakness associated with Mono. Also rubbing two drops with a dime size of carrier oil across your chest will also help tremendously.
- What Oils help with allergies? – Melaleuca and Roman Chamomile are an antihistamine powerhouse. Melaleuca helps to calm your immune response while Roman Chamomile helps to block the histamine response. Instantly soothing you. Diffusing is best during an allergy attack. I would hover close to the machine until the attack calms. If you don’t have a diffuser on hand, put a drop of each in you Palms, rub together and cup you nose. Inhale deeply until attack subsides.
- What oils help with panic attacks and anxiety? – Lavender and Any Citrus, in extreme cases, add Cedarwood, Vetiver, or Frankincense. We know from our previous shows that lavender us calming, any citrus is uplifting, and any EO high in sesquiterpenes is mood altering. The combo of any of these will give immediate relief to any emotional stress. They must be used aromatically. It’s the ability of the olfactory bulb to communicate to the limbic system that allows for these oils to affect our emotional core. And again, when a diffuser is not accessible, use the next best thing, our hands. Inhale deeply until calmness is reached.
- What oils helps with cold sores? – Clove dabbed on straight and if it’s for a youngster, add a drop of carrier oil with it. If it’s painful, add a drop of Copaiba. Also, it’s great for mouthwash and tooth pain. Just add a drop in with your mouthwash or better yet, use a teaspoon of coconut oil with a drop of Clove EO and swish around in your mouth while you’re in the shower. But make sure you don’t swallow it and spit it out in the trash. Oil and sink drains don’t mix.
- What oils help remove skin tags? – Tea tree or Frankincense for more sensitive skin. Put four to five drops of either oil on a cotton ball and put that right on top of the area where the skin tag is, cover with a piece of tape or band-aid. Change once a day. It’s a slow process, but usually in about a month it will start to blacken and fall off.
- What oils can you use with toothpaste? – Orange for whitening and Copaiba for sensitivity and pain. I would put one drop of either directly on your toothpaste. You can use it by itself on the brush, but I’ve heard it’s a bit over powering, especially the orange and that pretty much all you taste for the rest of the day.
- Coconut oil Carrier, hard vs, soft – which is better? Solid Coconut oil is considered the real stuff. It still has all of its chemical and medicinal properties. Liquid coconut oil is what’s called fractionated or refined coconut oil and it has its lauric acid removed so that it stays in its liquid form. Both are great for your skin, the solid form is a little more hydrating, but heavy. It’s great in skin balms, lip balms and salve recipes. Liquid coconut oil is great for mouthwash and oil pulling.
- How do you clean a diffuser? – There are a ton of different diffuser styles, so I’ll do my best to answer this. Most diffusers just have a small well where you put your water and oil. Then a small lid with a hole to diffuse the oil through. On these, I would just wipe them clean with a soft towel every so often. Some of the thicker oils, like Patchouli and Vetiver, leave a bit more residue, so you’ll need to clean a little more often. If your diffuser has tubes or is the kind that the bottle of oil screws into, usually those will come apart for cleaning and I would recommend either putting the parts in the silverware rack of your dishwasher or giving them a good soak in some soapy hot water to breakup any oil residue. Always read your manufacturer directions when you start using your diffuser. Different diffusers call for different amounts of oils.
- Are oils safe around pets? – Your precious pets are absolutely safe around oils. And you an even use some of your oils on them. I would treat them like babies and go heavy on the carrier oil. And I would refrain from letting them ingest them. Except if you have the occasional teething puppy that chews on everything, you could definitely use Copaiba on those gums, just like a baby. Some companies even use make oils specifically for pets. And with all things potent and chemicals, put them in a place that they are out of reach.
