Oh, Christmas Tree, Oh, Christmas Tree… Balsam Fir is one of the most used trees for Christmas anywhere in the United States. I bet a ton of you, myself included, had a variety of this tree in your living room decorated and smelling amazing and didn’t even realize it. Well, now you’ll know a bit of the science behind one of the reasons you’re so happy during the Christmas season with the lush boughs of the Balsam Fir occupying real estate in your home.
Balsam Fir has one of the highest levels of Monoterpenes in all the essential oils. It hovers right around the 90% range, which is up there with Galbanum (95%) which is part of the Parsley family, and Angelica (95%) which is often referred to as the Oil of the Angels. Now, we often talk about Sesquiterpenes and their ability to erase the “bad data” in our cells, meaning the genetic abnormalities that make us prone to disease and cancers. Once the Sesquiterpenes do their job and “erase” the that misinformation, Monterpenes come in immediately after and reprogram the cells with the correct “data”. Setting us on the correct DNA path. Imagine it like your computer. You know when it gets bogged down and slow, and you have to go in and do a system clean up and scan, and the it becomes its normal zippy self, loading programs and webpages with the greatest of ease. Our bodies are just the same. Any number of factors, like genetics, environmental toxins, oxidation over time, etc., can cause these issues in our bodies. And the chemical compounds in essential oils have been found for centuries to provide support and aid in healing for any variety of health issue under the sun. God wasn’t playing around when He made this stuff and specifically told us some of the ways to use them in His Word. He never ceases to amaze me with His infinite wisdom and forethought. Think of it this way, He knew before the foundations of the world that we would be using Lemon Essential Oil to treat cancer. Mind… Blown.
So back to Balsam Fir, with its high monoterpene count, we know that those molecules also have the ability to directly affect our limbic system, which is our emotional center. So, just the scent of that Christmas tree in your living room is helping to elevate and lighten the mood amongst everyone in the house. For a year-round Christmasy mood booster, mix Balsam Fir and a citrus EO in your diffuser and watch the whole house become positive and light-hearted.
Also because of the antiseptic qualities of Balsam Fir, it is an immune support booster. Just diffusing it throughout your home will help to kill cold-causing bacteria and prevent the spread of sickness. But remember, when using essential oils, it’s the continued daily use of them in your routine that makes them so beneficial. You can’t expect to cure a cold by only taking one cold tablet the whole time. If someone is under the weather, then start diffusing right away and continue to do so until they begin to feel better. I guarantee you, that the duration of their symptoms will be noticeably shorter and less family members will come down with it. Try it and see!
Another very interesting thing I discovered about Balsam Fir EO, is that it aids in your body’s natural production of HGH (Human Growth Hormone). This is the hormone that allows children to grow and develop properly. Like height, bone structure, even teeth development. And in us adults, it helps our bodies to repair bone damage. It aids in weight loss by helping to burn visceral fat or brown fat around our organs, once we begin and continue an exercise and balanced eating plan. It helps regulate our sleep patterns, etc. HGH is produced by our pituitary gland and even just a few days of lack of adequate sleep will noticeably decrease your HGH level output. And a prolonged decrease of natural HGH production will cause things like depression, hair loss, increased weight, insulin resistance, etc. You get the point. Well, Balsam Fir, when inhaled and/or taken internally, will help to naturally increase the levels of HGH produced by your pituitary gland. So, while you’re boosting the mood in your home, you’re aiding in your body’s reconstructive health. If you take this internally I would recommend 4 to 6 drops in a gel-cap once a day. And remember last week we talked about Idaho Blue Spruce for increased Testosterone production in men, I would recommend that you use both of these oils together internally because Testosterone and HGH go hand in hand.
Another really cool reason to love Balsam Fir is that it supports the reduction of the levels of Cortisol in your system. Cortisol is known as the stress hormone and can cause excess belly fat, cardiovascular problems, pre-mature aging, etc. You know what stress does to us all. It slowly kills you. So use of Balsam Fir will aid in the reduction this stress hormone.
And lastly, Balsam Fir is excellent for detoxing. It’s a natural anti-oxidant and helps to stimulate the body to flush itself of toxins. Especially the liver. Just a drop in a drop of carrier oil rubbed across your abdomen where your liver is, will stimulate your body to start expelling toxic matter from your system. I would recommend using this with Patchouli both topically and internally as Patchouli has the ability to bind to toxic matter and expel it even easier. This would be a great oil combo to add to your supplements when you start a weight loss or detox plan.
There are so many uses for Balsam Fir EO, it would make your head spin. I have a feeling we’ll be revisiting these evergreens to take about their additional benefits. Until then, Happy Oiling!
