Purge Me With Hyssop

Thou shalt purge me with hyssop and I shall be clean.   – Psalm 51:7

There’s a reason why Hyssop is talked about in the bible this way. It was considered a purifier and cleanser in biblical times. It was one of the herbs used to purify the lepers. It was used during Passover to sprinkle on the blood on the doorposts. It was also used by the Romans and thought to ward off the plague.

So, let’s talk about how we can use this ancient herb in its Essential Oil form now. It’s part of the mint family, so you can imagine what kind of smell it has. And very strong at that! As always with the mint family, it’s a great support to the central nervous system. It’s great for stimulating alertness and clearing the mind when used aromatically. Use this when you need to study or are fatigued and you need a little boost in energy. We’ve talked about the mint family before and it’s benefits to our mental health. But I want to issue a warning about Hyssop. Steer clear of it if you have been diagnosed with Epilepsy. Because of it’s a strong stimulant on our nervous system, it can activate epileptic fits.

Hyssop is also excellent for supporting your immune system when you get sick. It’s considered an antispasmodic, meaning it can help soothe your cough and it’s an expectorant, as well. So when you do cough, it will make that cough productive. Again, I would recommend using it aromatically and if it’s your little ones that are feeling under the weather, than make a simple chest rub with this recipe:

Chest Rub

  • ¼ cup of olive oil
  • ½ cup of coconut oil
  • ¼ cup of grated beeswax
  • 20 drops of Hyssop
  • 20 drops of Peppermint

Pour the beeswax, coconut and olive oil in a jar. Set it in a pan surrounded by water, heating it up until it melts together. Take it off the stove and stir it together for a few seconds, then add your Essential Oils. Simply rub this on the chest area and it will clear up the sinus and help clear up the lungs.

Hyssop can also be used when there’s a fever present to help “break it” and reduce the body temp. Put a few drops in a warm water bath. Soak for a little while and it should cause you to sweat and lower your temperature.

Hyssop is also great for digestive health. It’s known to get things moving again. It acts as a stimulant for your intestines, as well as, helps to increase digestive enzymes in your stomach. It also assists in the release of gas and relieves indigestion. Take 2 to 3 drops in a gel-cap to help. And again, if you are prone to epileptic seizures, please avoid.

Hyssop also helps to improve your circulation. When you increase your circulation, it helps to relieve the symptoms of rheumatism, arthritis, gout and swelling. It will help reduce the pain associated with each of those issues. Just a couple drops with a carrier oil rubbed on and around the affected area will help considerably. Add some Copaiba in there and it will really help bring you some relief!

Hyssop is also great for warding off lice and chasing away bugs in your garden. A simple spritz of water and a few drops of Hyssop throughout the hair will keep lice at bay. That same spray will keep certain types of beetles and flying insects from taking up residence in your fall harvests, as well.
