Soothe Me, Sweet Lavender

You’d be hard pressed to find a person that didn’t know a thing or two about lavender. One of the most well-known of all the essential oils, it is what I call the “Swiss Army Knife” of essential oils. If there was one oil for you to carry with you for any occasion, grab lavender. Let’s explore it’s soothing uses:

First, grab the diffuser and go to bed! Lavender is one of the most relaxing of scents of all EOs. Just about every diffuser recipe I know of uses lavender in its base. One of my go-to, get the babies to sleep, recipes is:

4 drops Lavender

4 drops Cedarwood

1 drop of Patchouli

3 drops Bergamot

Just enough earthy, happy, sleepiness to help the babies into dreamland…. Zzzzz…  Lavender is super soothing in a hot bath, as well. Just grab a handful of Epsom salt, add a few drops of lavender, throw it in the bath, and relax your day away. Not only is it relaxing scent wise, it is an amazing skin soother as it is considered an anti-inflammatory. For instance, let’s say you fall asleep while you’re laying out, getting a tan, like I did once for three hours at the beach. (Why didn’t I know about lavender, then???) Use this recipe to help cool and heal that sunburn super-fast:

6 drops of Lavender

6 drops of peppermint

2 oz of sweet almond oil

Mix together and rub liberally all over the burn. The lavender will calm the irritation and promote faster healing, while the peppermint adds a cooling, soothing effect. If the burn is particularly bad, add 6 drops of Copaiba for a numbing effect.

Lavender is also wonderful for treating acne! Add a drop to your moisturizer during your skin care regimen and see if a difference with your acne within days. It calms the inflammation of acne and reduces scarring, and regulates the over production of sebum through hormonal regulation. You can also do spot treating by placing a small amount directly on active acne and scars.

Lavender is also anti-bacterial and a coagulant, meaning it helps to clot blood. Next time you cut yourself, put a drop of Lavender on the wound and watch it slowly lessen blood flow. I’ve heard of its use on major wounds, buying enough time for the person to get somewhere for professional care. Have a wound already? Put a drop on and help keep it free from infection.

It’s also a digestive aid, helping with upset stomach, and relieve from gaseous foods. Add a drop or two to a 16 oz glass of water, shake or stir really well, and drink it down.

And these are just a few of the many uses for this wonderful EO! No wonder it’s considered a natural “Swiss Army Knife”! So grab a bottle of 100% therapeutic grade Lavender, put on your hero cape and go save the day!
